To ensure the best possible outcome and minimize side effects, please follow these guidelines before your chemical peel appointment.

1. One to Two Weeks Before Treatment

  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, or self-tanners for at least 1 week prior to treatment. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily (reapply every 2 hours when outdoors).
  • Do not wax, thread, or use depilatory creams in the treatment area for 7 days prior.
  • Avoid laser, IPL, or other resurfacing procedures in the area for 2 weeks before your peel.

2. Three to Five Days Before Treatment

  • Discontinue retinoids or Retin-A products (Retin A, Tretinoin, Renova, Differin, etc.) for 5 days prior to treatment.
  • Stop using exfoliating agents such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, or any scrubs for 3 days prior.
  • If prescribed, begin a melanin-suppressing agent (like hydroquinone) as directed to help prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially for darker skin tones.
  • If you are prone to cold sores, begin taking an antiviral medication such as Valacyclovir (Valtrex) the day before or the day of your treatment.

3. Day of Treatment

  • Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, lotion, or sunscreen.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise or activities that increase body temperature before your appointment.
  • Inform your provider of any recent illness, new medications, or open lesions in the treatment area.

After your chemical peel, your skin will be sensitive and require gentle care and sun protection. Temporary redness, tightness, or peeling are expected.

Days 1–2: Initial Recovery

  • Skin may feel warm, flushed, or tight—similar to a mild sunburn.
  • Use a gentle, non-exfoliating cleanser and hydrating moisturizer as recommended by your provider.
  • Avoid touching, rubbing, or picking your skin.
  • Refrain from heat exposure, including hot showers, saunas, and exercise that causes sweating.
  • Apply a physical SPF 30+ sunscreen daily and reapply as needed.

Days 3–7: Peeling Phase

  • Peeling or flaking may begin—this is normal. Do not manually peel or pick the skin.
  • Continue gentle cleansing and moisturizing.
  • Avoid exfoliants, retinoids, or acidic products.
  • Stay out of direct sunlight and maintain daily SPF use.
  • Pigmented areas may temporarily darken before lightening.

After One Week

  • You may gradually resume your normal skincare regimen once peeling has stopped and sensitivity has resolved.
  • Continue to use sunscreen daily, as your skin remains photosensitive for several weeks.
  • Follow your provider’s recommendations for follow-up treatments to maintain optimal results.
  • Mild redness, dryness, and flaking are expected and temporary.
  • Contact the clinic immediately if you experience significant swelling, blistering, or signs of infection.
  • Use only products recommended by your provider during the healing process to avoid irritation or adverse reactions.
