To ensure optimal results and minimize complications, please carefully follow these guidelines before your dermal filler appointment.

General Pre-Treatment Guidelines

  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Dermal fillers cannot be performed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Please schedule your appointment accordingly.
  • Cold Sores: If you have a history of cold sores, notify us in advance. You may be prescribed an antiviral medication such as Valacyclovir (Valtrex) to begin 2 days before your appointment and continue 5 days after to prevent a flare-up.
  • Reschedule if Needed: Please reschedule if you develop a cold sore, rash, or active breakout in or around the treatment area prior to your appointment.
  • Eat Before Treatment: Eat a small meal or snack before your appointment, especially if you tend to feel lightheaded or faint with injections.
  • Recent Antibiotic Use: If you are currently taking antibiotics or have within the last two weeks, please call to reschedule, as treatment cannot be performed.
  • Dental Appointments: Avoid dental cleanings, whitening, or other dental procedures two weeks before and afteryour filler appointment.
  • Event Planning: Do not plan major social events for at least one month after treatment. Swelling and bruising can last up to 1–2 weeks, and final results may take 3–4 weeks to settle.
To minimize swelling and bruising:
  • Begin taking Arnica Montana tablets one week prior to your appointment. Follow the directions on the label.
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for 7 days before treatment unless medically necessary, including:
    • Aspirin
    • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
    • Aleve
    • Vitamin E
    • Omega-3/Fish Oil
    • Ginkgo Biloba
    • St. John’s Wort
    • Excedrin or other NSAIDs
  • Tylenol (acetaminophen) is safe to use before your appointment if needed for discomfort (unless contraindicated by your provider).
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your visit, and avoid red wine for 72 hours prior to treatment.

For safety and optimal outcomes:

  • Avoid filler treatments 6 weeks before or after any COVID-19 or flu vaccine.
  • Avoid PRP treatments 4 weeks before or after your filler appointment.

Contact Aesthetic + Mind MD immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Severe pain or color change (paleness, dusky patches, blotchiness) anywhere on the face, even away from the injection area.
  • Increasing pain or swelling several hours post-treatment (should improve, not worsen).
  • Blistering, pustules, or rash 24–72 hours after injections.
  • Severe swelling (tripling in size) within 12 hours of treatment.

Mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness are expected for up to 2–3 weeks. Follow these steps for optimal recovery.
General Aftercare

  • Apply ice packs gently to treated areas for short intervals to minimize swelling.
  • Expect mild numbness for 1–2 hours from the lidocaine in the filler.
  • Avoid alcohol, blood thinners, and anti-inflammatory medications listed above until swelling resolves.
  • For discomfort, use Tylenol unless contraindicated.
  • Apply Arnica gel or continue Arnica tablets as needed until bruising subsides.
  • Allow 2 full weeks for filler to settle before evaluating results or scheduling touch-ups.
  • Wait at least 2 weeks before any follow-up or touch-up injections.
    • Note: Additional filler for added volume is not a touch-up and will require a new appointment.
  • No exercise or strenuous activity for 24 hours after injections (light walking is fine).
  • No yoga, hot tubs, or saunas for 72 hours.
  • Do not apply makeup for at least 6 hours post-procedure.
  • Avoid facials, massages, exfoliation devices (like Clarisonic), or skin treatments for 2 weeks.
  • Avoid tanning or prolonged sun exposure until swelling and bruising resolve. Direct sunlight on active bruises can cause skin staining.
  • For tear trough (under-eye) filler, sleep elevated for the first 24–48 hours and consider taking Benadryl at bedtime to minimize swelling.
  • For cheek or jawline filler, avoid tight-fitting face masks for 2 weeks (e.g., N95, ski masks).
  • Wait 2–3 weeks between filler appointments to allow full healing before re-treatment.

If you received lip filler, please follow these additional instructions:

  • Avoid drinking through straws and intimate oral activity for 72 hours.
  • Avoid massaging or manipulating the lips for 2 weeks. If small bumps remain after that period, gently massage or contact your provider.
  • We inject no more than 1 mL per session to ensure natural results and prevent filler migration or distortion.
  • If additional volume is desired, appointments will be spaced at least 3 weeks apart.
  • Avoid dental visits and teeth whitening for 2 weeks after injections.
  • Avoid lipstick or gloss for 24 hours post-procedure.
  • Use Aquaphor, ChapStick, or Vaseline for 1–2 weeks to combat dryness during healing.
  • Swelling and bruising typically subside within 10–14 days.
  • Final results appear around 3–4 weeks post-treatment.
