To ensure optimal results and minimize risks, please follow these guidelines before your Kybella® appointment.

2 Weeks Before Treatment

  • Avoid elective dental procedures (cleanings, fillings, whitening, etc.) to reduce the risk of infection.
  • If medically cleared, discontinue blood-thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Aleve, fish oil, vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, garlic, or ginkgo biloba.
  • Notify our office if you develop any active infections, cold sores, or cystic acne in the treatment area, as your appointment will need to be rescheduled.

3–5 Days Before Treatment

  • Avoid alcohol to reduce the likelihood of bruising and swelling.
  • Stop using harsh or active skincare products (retinoids, glycolic acid, exfoliating acids) on the chin and neck area.

Day of Treatment

  • Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, lotion, or sunscreen on the chin and neck.
  • Eat a light meal or snack beforehand to prevent lightheadedness during injections.
  • Inform your provider of any new medications, illnesses, or medical changes since your last visit.

After your Kybella® treatment, it is normal to experience swelling, tenderness, numbness, and firmness in the treated area. Follow these guidelines to promote healing and maximize results.
Immediately After Treatment

  • Apply an ice pack (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off) for the first 24–48 hours to minimize swelling and discomfort.
  • Expect significant swelling that peaks within the first 24–48 hours and gradually subsides over the next 2–3 weeks.

First 72 Hours

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat exposure (hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms).
  • Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the injection sites.
  • Sleep with your head elevated for the first two nights to help reduce swelling.
  • Swelling: Peaks within 24–48 hours and may last up to 2 weeks.
  • Tenderness or Numbness: Common and may persist for several weeks.
  • Firmness or Small Nodules: Can occur beneath the skin and typically resolve on their own.
  • Bruising: May last up to 7–10 days. Makeup may be applied 24 hours after treatment if skin is intact.
  • Kybella® results are gradual and improve over time as fat cells are naturally eliminated.
  • Most patients require 2–4 treatments spaced 6–8 weeks apart for optimal results.
  • Minor swelling or firmness may last several weeks between sessions.
  • Do not schedule other cosmetic treatments on the chin or neck area for at least 4 weeks after Kybella®.
  • Severe or rapidly worsening pain
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Uneven or asymmetrical smile
  • Signs of infection (redness, pus, warmth, or fever)
