To ensure the best results and minimize risks, please carefully follow these pre-care guidelines before your PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) treatment.

General Guidelines

  • Illness or Infection: If you develop a fever, cold, flu, active infection, or inflammation in the treatment area, please contact us to reschedule. Receiving PRP when your immune system is heightened may increase the risk of complications.
  • Scheduling: Plan your PRP session at least 3–4 weeks before any special event or vacation to allow for healing and swelling to subside.
  • Cold Sores: If you have a history of cold sores, begin a prophylactic antiviral (such as Valtrex) on or before the day of your treatment to help prevent a flare-up.

Medications and Supplements

  • Discontinue anti-inflammatory medications (steroidal and non-steroidal) such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Aleve, or Medrol/Prednisone 3 days to 1 week prior to treatment.
    • Inflammation is a key mechanism of PRP’s healing process; suppressing it can reduce effectiveness.
  • Steroid Use: If you have used steroids within 2 weeks prior to treatment, we cannot proceed. Consult your physician for approval before discontinuing steroid use.
  • Avoid blood-thinning supplements for 3 days to 1 week before and after treatment, including:
    • Vitamin E and A
    • Gingko Biloba
    • Garlic, Flax Oil, or Cod Liver Oil
    • Omega-3 and other Essential Fatty Acids (EFA, DHA)
These can increase bruising and bleeding risk.

Lifestyle

  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, Niacin supplements, and smoking for 3 days before and after treatment, as these may increase bruising and slow healing.
  • Maintain a balanced diet and stay well hydrated (aim for at least 64 oz of water daily).

PRP initiates a natural healing response that requires controlled inflammation to rebuild and repair tissue. Follow these post-care instructions to ensure optimal recovery and results.

Immediately After Treatment

  • Do not touch, rub, or manipulate the treated areas for at least 8 hours after your procedure.
  • You may experience mild redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, or itching for up to 7–10 days. This is normal and temporary.
  • If desired, apply ice packs intermittently for comfort. Note that excessive icing may reduce inflammation, which is necessary for healing.

Medications and Pain Relief

  • Avoid NSAIDs and anti-inflammatory medications (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Advil, steroids) for at least 7 days following treatment.
    • PRP relies on your body’s natural inflammatory process to stimulate collagen and tissue regeneration.
  • For discomfort, use Tylenol (acetaminophen) or similar products as needed.

Skincare and Activity

  • Avoid applying lotions, creams, or makeup for at least 6 hours post-procedure.
  • Do not engage in vigorous exercise, sun exposure, saunas, or heat treatments for 48 hours.
  • Always wear SPF 30 or higher daily.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and smoking for at least 48 hours before and after treatment to support healing and collagen formation.
    • Smoking, in particular, impairs circulation and significantly reduces treatment effectiveness.

Hydration and Nutrition

  • Continue drinking at least 64 ounces of water the day of and after your treatment.
  • Maintain a healthy, nutrient-rich diet to optimize cell regeneration and overall recovery.
  • Mild redness, swelling, and sensitivity for several days.
  • Bruising or pinpoint marks at the injection site may appear and will fade within 1–2 weeks.
  • Noticeable skin improvement often appears gradually over 4–6 weeks, continuing for several months as collagen production increases.
